About the track: "This track is William Kouam Djoko's contribution to the various artist release Soweso 006. William is one of the biggest talents from Amsterdam and we're proud that he became part of the Soweso family. Expect a full release from him later this year including a killer remix by our good friend Lemos!" - LAUHAUS
On the eve of his NYC debut at LOVE on Friday, we caught up with Dutch DJ/Producer Lauhaus to talk Technotronic, Chinese triplets and Soul music from... The Hague?...
halcyon: Tell us about your earliest experience with electronic dance music. What was the soundtrack to your discovery and how does it connect to the music you now play, produce and release?
(http://www.halcyonline.com/wp-content/uploads/posts/lauhaus.jpg)Lauhaus: My first contact with electronic music was Pump Up the Jam by Technotronic. This was the first time I heard house music and I loved it. It took me one day though to find out it had to be on 45rpm instead of 33rpm. LOL!
Like most electronic dance artists, you both DJ and produce, but the term DJ/Producer is rather misleading, conflating two disciplines that are distinctly different. For you, which came first, what do you enjoy most about each and at which do you excel more naturally?
Been doing both for a long time. When I started DJing in clubs around Holland, making music was still more of a hobby to me. So I guess DJing was my first passion, but producing grew on me and I love doing it. I think there is definitely a big difference between producers and DJs, but nowadays it's almost impossible to be one without the other. Without releasing tracks, it's quite hard to build a name internationally. On the other hand, it's almost impossible to make a living by just releasing music with all the illegal downloads and the decline of the vinyl industry. I think it's essential in these times to do both if you want to succeed in this business.
As far as your DJ performance goes, what can we here in the NYC scene expect?
From Deep House to Tech House to Techno. I love to combine different styles. Of course i will be playing lots of fresh music from Amsterdam, new stuff from my labels Soweso and We Dig. Music and I always like to play a couple of oldies.
Your first Lauhaus productions started to drop in 2006 for Intacto and Remote Area, two labels with whom you've continued to release through 2010. What lead you to branch out last year and start your own imprint, Soweso?
When I started Soweso together with Kabale und Liebe, the goal was not to release our own music. We wanted to build a strong platform for upcoming artists with that specific Soweso sound. When we got in contact with Makam it was the perfect timing to start the label. Me and Kabale both have great homes to release on with Remote Area, Intacto and 100% Pure, but we'll definitely be doing a release on Soweso or our newest label We Dig. Music sometime soon.
Can you elaborate on the inspiration for the name SOWESO and three baby heads logo?
The name is a play on the dutch expression "sowieso," which us Dutchies use a lot. It means sometimes like "ofcourse" or "for sure" and it comes from the German language. We took out the "i" for aesthetic value and to make it easier to pronounce in English.</itunes:summary>

On the occasion of The Shift's (http://www.halcyondigi.com/search/?t=artist&releases&s=The+Shift) new album Spies, being released, halcyon caught up with the band's leading man, Scottie B., to chat about the group's origins, their days as residents at halcyon classic, philosophy and why they are like The Beatles. We even dug up an old Schematic set from our archives...
"It seems like there should have been a punk band, an '80s punk band called The Shift, ...but there never was," joked Scottie B. when asked about the band's origins. Far from his head-banging, adolescent garage band fantasy, The Shift started back in the early '00s as a jam session amongst a close-knit crew of local DJs and musicians. Over the years, including a long-running Saturday night residency at halcyon classic called Schematic, and an internet radio show of the same name, the loose sessions evolved into the eclectic live house band The Shift, and ultimately into a studio project.
Listening to their second full length, Spies, it is apparent the group has taken a sideways shift (no pun intended!) from their danceable live four-to-the-floor roots to explore their affinity for Downtempo Funk, Trip-Hop and sultry Acid Jazz in the studio.

halcyon: So, how did an upstate breaks DJ/underground house music promoter end up in a live house band? Can you tell me how The Shift came together?
(http://www.halcyonline.com/wp-content/uploads/posts/scottieb.jpg)Scottie B: It sort of just evolved into a live house band. It started off me with my turntables, a bunch of drum machines and Chris Tempas, who is now the keyboardist. We wrote all the songs initially and it was pretty much just drum machines, keyboard and a base guitar, sometimes simultaneously. Then we had Mike DeVellis, sax player and a long time friend of ours who would come upstate and play sax with our DJ sets. Then there was Sneak E. Pete, he's the guy that actually brought DeVillas upstate. Pete and I run a record label together, Blunted Funk.
H: Is that related to Dank Funk?
SB: Dank Funk, that was my production company I started back in the '90s in Syracuse to throw parties, and Pete did a thing called Blunted Circuits in Ithica. When I started DJing I played house, but a lot of breaks. Pete was mostly breaks, so we were like the two breaks DJs in the upstate scene so promoters from different cities would book us to do battle sets. And we both moved down here to Brooklyn in like 2000 so we started a label called Blunted Funk. Just combined the two names.
H: Nice, I get it. So when your crew started jamming together, before you legitimately became The Shift, when was your "aha" moment, when you guys realized, "yeah, we have something here"?
SB: We did this event at Galapagos called Arts and Sciences. We had a lot of friends who were artists and they'd come in and show their stuff there for one night, like big instillation pieces, some smaller stuff too, but if you're only showing stuff for one night it should be kind of eye catching. So we'd do that and then I'd DJ, have a couple other friends DJ and that's when Tempest would start doing our live set. And DeVilles would come and play live with us. John Payne would play bass, Rhiannon would do vocals, Judi Kaplan who did vocals on the first record would come in and do vocals, we had a friend who would do spoken word stuff, Cooper, who's great. My girlfriend at the time kept bugging me saying you have to let this guy, Brian Fegan play the guitar with you guys, he's a really really good guitarist.</itunes:summary>
