For the Love of Vinyl pays homage to legendary album art creators Hipgnosis
In case we weren’t clear on how much we love vinyl, this book is a tribute to everything we love about it and more…
There can never be enough love for vinyl in our shop… For the Love of Vinyl is a detailed tribute to Hipgnosis, the legendary design studio founded by the eccentric duo, Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell. These blokes are responsible for some of the most timeless rock iconography to date: you know the triangular prism on Floyd’s classic Dark Side of the Moon? Yeah, they did that. Or you know that haunting image of naked bodies slivering across Zepplin’s Houses of Holy? They did that too…and so, so much more brilliant and bizarre works that pushed the boundaries of experimental photography and album art at the time of classic rock’s golden age.
For the Love of Vinyl is a detailed and entertaining tribute to roughly sixty of their most notable works, written and compiled by the designers themselves. Along with colorful pages of their beautiful imagery, the book is an exciting spill-all account of what went into creating these pieces, from road trips with the bands to pulling all-nighters in their “dump” of a studio interpreting bar after bar of music. The honest anecdotes and critical commentary provide detailed insight to the musical history of classic rock and why these album covers are valued as much as the music tucked inside them.
The book is themed around vinyl from front to back, cleverly divided into Side 1 and Side 2. Sandwiched between the two “sides” are a collection of insightful essays by some of the artists and designers who worked closely with the design team (such as Nick Mason, Scott Rowley and Peter Blake).
