With a career spanning four decades and fourteen albums, Terry Callier is, without question, one of the few remaining true musical legends. It has been a few years now, but the wait for Terry’s next opus is over with with release of “Hidden Conversations” on Mr. Bongo. For this chapter, penned mostly by himself, Terry’s deep, soulful, emotive vocal stylings are paired with haunting production by none other than Massive Attack.
DJ Pete Isaac from legendary UK club night Jelly Jazz compiled The Best Of Ray Camacho & The Tear Drops: Chicano Salsa, Funk, Cumbia & Soul 1968 to 1971 (Freestyle Records) after he discovered and fell under the spell of Ray´s music on original vinyl during a trip to New York in the late ’90s.

Weighing in at just over twelve minutes of complex electronic composition, nuanced arrangement and voluminous production, “Behind the Stars” is a monumental listening experience akin to reading a James Joyce novel. Along the way, one might otherwise sail adrift in the shifting layers of dark atmospheric audio that Hendrick Weber, aka Pantha du Prince, artfully employs to comprise his track, but just as the plot thickens to keep the pages turning, so does an analog bass line, rising from the murk to intermingle with a swinging hi-hat and keep the epic tale on track. Rarely will you hear dance music as rich in detail and intellectually satisfying as this.
