Rafskinna, a multimedia magazine from Iceland explores the absurd and experimental

Submitted by Bianca Von Baum

Rafskinna, a multimedia magazine from Iceland explores the absurd and experimentalRafskinna is a very special addition to our collection of offbeat and unusual publications that hails all the way from Iceland’s talented design team, Bor_i_. Considering we are always on the lookout for hidden gems, this publication fits right at home with the rest of our handpicked magazines and collector items. Rafskinna is a one-of-a-kind multimedia magazine comprised of a DVD of short-films, documentaries and music videos, a CD with remixes by Icelandic composers and a pamphlet with essays, old cartoon illustrations and an interview spotlighting the issue’s featured artist, Shoplifter – all smartly packaged in a foldout cardboard envelope held together with rubber bands.

The theme of this issue of Rafskinna is ‘reflections,’ and features artists that explore connections between past and present, young and old and traditional and contemporary ideas. To continue this theme, there are several older works that are re-visited, including the first short film ever to be broadcasted on Icelandic television. What makes this magazine so special is the diversity of selected work. You’ll find a documentary on Icelandic cowsheds, a video piece on the Human Hair Harp (a performance art by Shoplifter) and the one on a hip hop artist that remixes Icelandic cake dough, all under the same table of contents. From the absurd to the experimental, Rafskinna explores the various artists, ideas and methods in the contemporary art world through a very special approach and refreshing foreign lens. There are only 2,000 copies available, so get yours before they’re history!
